Karnataka is taking a bold step to democratize technology with the launch of KEO computers, priced at ₹18,999. Designed specifically for rural libraries and schools, these AI-ready machines are not just a technological upgrade; they represent a commitment to bridging the digital divide in education. The KEO initiative, spearheaded by the Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd (Keonics), aims to equip students with essential digital skills, fostering AI literacy even in low-connectivity regions.
The KEO computers come packed with features that cater to the educational needs of students, including an AI agent named BUDDH, which is tailored to assist learners based on the Karnataka state syllabus. This is a significant shift from the traditional approach to education technology, focusing on accessibility and affordability. Information Technology Minister Priyank Kharge emphasized that less than a year ago, KEO was merely an idea, and now it is set to make a tangible impact on the educational landscape.
However, the rollout is not without its challenges. The project has to navigate the complexities of global supply chain issues and rising chip prices, which have affected many tech initiatives worldwide. Despite these hurdles, the Karnataka government has managed to keep the price point low, making it an attractive option for rural institutions that often struggle with funding for technology.
