India's burgeoning AI landscape is facing a critical challenge: a looming water crisis. As data centers multiply, driven by investments from tech giants like Google and Amazon, the demand for water is skyrocketing. Currently, data centers consume an estimated 37.5 billion liters of water annually, primarily sourced from rivers and aquifers that also support local communities. This unsustainable model raises alarms as India's major reservoirs are operating at less than one-third of their capacity, highlighting a severe imbalance between technological growth and natural resource management.
The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated. With the data center power capacity expected to surge from 1.5 GW to 6.5 GW by 2030, the implications for water usage are staggering. Each megawatt of data center capacity requires about 2.5 crore liters of water annually, exacerbating the existing water scarcity in many regions. The reliance on evaporative cooling methods, which waste over 80% of water used, further complicates the issue. Without immediate action, the intersection of AI growth and water sustainability could lead to dire consequences for both industries and communities.
