In a significant move, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron have agreed to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and defense technologies, emphasizing local manufacturing in India. This partnership comes at a crucial time when global AI dynamics are shifting, particularly with the US imposing export controls on advanced AI models, including those from companies like Anthropic. Modi's push for 'Make in India' is now being reinforced by a strategic alliance with France, which aims to leverage French expertise in AI to bolster India's indigenous capabilities.
The discussions, held in Nice, also touched upon expanding collaboration in space situational awareness, a critical area as both nations seek to enhance their capabilities amid increasing military activity in space. The agreement includes a framework for co-development and co-production of defense technologies, particularly the procurement of Rafale fighter jets, where India aims to manufacture a significant portion locally. This move not only strengthens India's defense posture but also positions it as a key player in the global AI landscape.
