India's embrace of artificial intelligence is a double-edged sword. While it opens doors for innovation, it also amplifies vulnerabilities, as evidenced by IBM's latest report revealing that the average cost of a data breach has surged to Rs 25.5 crore. This marks a 15.9% increase from the previous year, highlighting the urgent need for organizations to bolster their cybersecurity measures. Alarmingly, 26% of these breaches were driven by AI-generated attacks, underscoring a troubling trend where attackers leverage advanced technologies against their targets.
The financial services sector bears the brunt, with average breach costs reaching Rs 40.9 crore, followed closely by technology and communications sectors. This stark reality prompts a critical question: Are Indian businesses equipped to handle the evolving threat landscape? Currently, only 32% of organizations report extensive use of AI and security automation, leaving many vulnerable to increasingly sophisticated attacks.
Experts emphasize that organizations employing AI in their security operations experience significantly lower breach costs. Companies with robust AI strategies paid an average of Rs 21.3 crore per breach, compared to Rs 31.6 crore for those without. This disparity illustrates the pressing need for businesses to integrate AI across their security frameworks, moving beyond basic detection to proactive threat management.
