Mumbai's Dharavi, often viewed through the lens of its challenges, is on the brink of a significant transformation. The Adani Group's ambitious Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) aims to create an integrated green-blue network that will not only improve air quality but also enhance biodiversity and public spaces. Central to this initiative is the restoration of the Mithi River, which will serve as the ecological backbone of the redevelopment, featuring a 3.3 km public riverfront promenade.
The project plans to plant around 40,000 trees within Dharavi and an additional 200,000 across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This extensive greening effort is designed to combat urban heat, improve stormwater management, and create healthier living environments for residents. With features like viewing decks and cafes along the riverfront, the initiative seeks to make these spaces accessible and enjoyable for all Mumbaikars.
Moreover, the DRP's focus on sustainability is not just about aesthetics; it addresses pressing urban issues such as pollution and public health. The introduction of permeable paving and bioswales will aid in groundwater recharge and enhance the river ecosystem's long-term viability. This holistic approach marks a significant departure from traditional urban planning, which often neglects ecological considerations.
